Price vs. Productivity

Price vs. productivity – one of my favorite topics! I have yet to see a project where the discussion, both internally as well as with the client does not come to ‘daily rates’ at some point during the deal. Certainly as soon as procurement gets involved, nothing else seems to matter anymore…

Now, everyone who has ever managed a project knows, often through painful experience, that the best (read: productive) project team members contribute an overproportional amount, often magnitudes more to the project success than unproductive ones. The pain I spoke of comes when you were not able to staff those A-players for the team…

There can be many reasons why someone is not productive, could be skills, ability, motivation, but this is a separate discussion…

In any case, for the key roles on each IT project – project manager, technical architect, functional architect, build lead, business analyst – the price should not be the deciding criterium for selection, if you want the project to deliver on its promises, in time and on budget…

Happy to discuss further…
